MSN Beta Attacks : MSN.com is Now Pulling Search Results From MSN Search Beta
San Diego, CA January 20, 2005: The war of the search engines begins today. Search engine result pages from http://www.MSN.com are now being piloted by MSN’s search (beta) search engine. How will other industry players like Google.com and Yahoo.com react? Will MSN use hostility to take over yet another multi billion dollar market?
In the past, MSN.com used Yahoo’s search results. For months now, the new MSN search engine (beta) spidering robot MSNbot has been rapidly spidering the web looking for more websites to index. Search engine optimization firms have noted that MSNbot has been working swiftly and efficiently to index and prioritize hundreds of millions of webpages in a short time. It is adept at progressing through an entire site and not missing any of the sub directories, or obscure links.
If Microsoft has created such a great search property will it become the dominating search destination? The ultimate fate of the new MSN search engine will undoubtedly be in the hands of the consumers who use it. As additional search products like desktop search, toolbars, and messenger continue to arrive, the competition will inevitably heat up.
Big players like Google.com and Yahoo.com are in for some arduous competition. Microsoft can outspend both of them combined, and still have ample money left over to purchase a small country. Although Microsoft may not be recognized for being an innovator, if they decide to come into your market you better be prepared to fight.
It will be interesting to see how Microsoft will use its dominance in parallel markets to help leverage their new search engine. Some of us may remember the days of Netscape before internet explorer came about. Microsoft’s ability to leverage windows desktop system slaughtered Netscape, and their ability to compete. Will Google and Yahoo be next?
And what about advertising? If you go to MSN.com and enter a search query, there are no advertisements! Obviously Microsoft must have a plan to make money, but how will they carry it out? As soon as MSN turned off Yahoo’s advertising results, they began to loose millions of dollars in advertising revenue. Sure they can afford to do without it, but how will they make their own search property profitable.
Microsoft’s ability to outspend everyone certainly comes to mind. If they were to offer discounted advertising, or incentives for advertising, a significant amount of the available advertising budgets out there could be used up. If companies spend their advertising money at MSN, they may spend less at google.com and Yahoo.com. It is also important that SEO Companies can see a profit potential for their clients in MSN’s new advertising solutions.
Ultimately the war of the search engines will come down to a popularity contest. You can’t win over advertisers and their budgets unless you have their potential customers searching on your search engine. Microsoft has the power, money, and dominates certain parallel markets that others can not touch. For now google is sovereign over the popularity contest, but is loosing foothold on a continuing basis. It will be compelling to see what MSN will do to turn the tables and win the war of the search engines. The first shot has been fired, who will attack next?
